This makes LinkedIn the most AI-saturated platform in the analysis, though other platforms also show significant levels of machine-written text.

The study draws its data from Pangram's Chrome extension, which scans content as users browse the web and flags text likely produced by AI models. While the company has a clear commercial interest in promoting its tool, the scale of the findings aligns with broader concerns about the authenticity of online discourse. LinkedIn, a platform ostensibly built for professional networking and career development, appears to be particularly affected, with nearly half of its longform articles showing no signs of human authorship.

How Other Platforms Compare

Pangram's analysis extends beyond LinkedIn. On Medium, often considered a hybrid social media and publishing platform, 31% of longform content is flagged as fully AI-generated. X (formerly Twitter) shows 29% of longform posts as AI-generated, but the study notes that if human-AI hybrid content is included, only 53.2% of X's longform articles are fully human-authored. In contrast, short posts on X are only 9% AI-generated, likely because brevity makes detection harder or because users prefer short, personal updates.

Reddit, a platform known for its community-driven discussions, shows 13% of longform content as AI-generated, with shortform at just 3%. Substack, the newsletter platform, has a lower overall rate of AI content: 10% for longform and 12% for shortform. The relatively low numbers on Reddit and Substack may stem from their emphasis on authentic, niche voices, though the presence of any AI content raises concerns about the erosion of genuine human expression.

Implications for Authenticity and Trust

The findings from Pangram underscore a growing challenge for social media platforms and their users. As AI writing tools become more sophisticated and accessible, the line between human and machine-generated content blurs. For LinkedIn, where the stated purpose is building professional relationships and showcasing expertise, the high percentage of AI-generated posts poses a particular problem. A recent New York Times trend piece asked if LinkedIn was becoming more interesting, but the Pangram data suggests that much of that interest may be artificial.

"If the central mission is to boost your career, can you be authentic on LinkedIn?" the Times piece asked. If using AI to generate posts counts as inauthentic—and most would agree it does—then the answer appears to be increasingly doubtful. Professionals are turning to AI to craft thought leadership pieces, personal anecdotes, and industry insights, effectively outsourcing their voice to algorithms. This not only dilutes the platform's value but also makes it harder for genuine human connection to flourish.

How AI Detection Works

Pangram's tool, like other AI text detectors, analyzes patterns in writing that are characteristic of large language models. These include repetitive phrasing, overly uniform sentence structures, and a lack of personal voice or idiosyncrasies. The company claims a high accuracy rate, but such tools are not infallible. False positives and negatives are common, and adversarial techniques can sometimes fool detectors. Nevertheless, Pangram's study provides a snapshot of the scale of AI content on social media, even if the exact numbers may vary.

The Chrome extension collects data passively while users browse, meaning the sample is self-selected and might not be perfectly representative. However, the large volume of scans—over millions of posts—gives some statistical weight to the findings. The study also distinguishes between shortform and longform content, reflecting different use cases and detection challenges. Longform posts, with more text to analyze, are easier to flag than short updates, which may explain why shortform AI percentages are generally lower.

Platforms like LinkedIn, which rely on user-generated content for engagement, face a delicate balance. Encouraging AI tools can boost content volume and user activity, but it risks alienating users who value authenticity.
